One of Top Antioxidants for Increasing Collagen Plumping Fine Lines &
Wrinkles & Helping with Inflammation
This remarkable Anti-Oxidant has been shown to be:
- 50 times more powerful than vitamin E
- 20 times more effective than vitamin C in neutralizing free radicals.
Pycnogenol is one of the most expensive ingredients in the world, comparatively priced about the same as 24K Gold. As one of the most potent natural scavenger of free radicals, Pycnogenol® attacks aggressive radicals before they cause any damage by oxidative stress. As a super-antioxidant, Pycnogenol® counteracts that danger in two ways: It stimulates our cells to double their antioxidative power, and, it catches free radicals in the blood stream. That double defense makes Pycnogenol® unique.
Pycnogenol® also has important anti-aging and anti-inflammatory skin care properties which helps to stabilize the capillary system, improve circulation. By increasing the skin’s resistance to inflammation, it is an ideal ingredient for those who have sensitive skin or who suffer from Rosacea and other inflammatory skin conditions. Pycnogenol® skin care products are fortified with synergistic nutrients and in addition, are all fragrance free. Pycnogenol® is extracted from the bark of the French maritime pine.
Pycnogenol® binds and protects collagen, the protein that keeps the skin tight and smooth. Enzymes and free radicals can no longer break down collagen and elastin fibers, the process enabling development of wrinkles. Pycnogenol® defies the accelerated aging of the skin due to exposure to sunlight (photo-ageing). Pycnogenol® helps to lighten-up disturbing dark spots of the skin resulting from over-pigmentation. Pycnogenol® restores a good blood circulation in tiny capillaries of the skin. With abundance of water and oxygen and removal of waste products the skin is replenished with moisture, looking young and fresh.
A recent study conducted by the Leibenz Research Institute for Environmental Medicine in Dusseldorf, Germany, (IUF) found French maritime pine bark extract (as Pycnogenol, from Horphag Research) improved several parameters of skin aging. The results were recently published in the journal.
The study looked at 20 healthy women, aged 55 to 68 years, and used Pycnogenol® every day for 12 weeks. At the start of the trial, as well as at the six- and 12-week mark, researchers assessed skin hydration, skin elasticity and skin fatigue using non-invasive biophysical methods. Further, at the beginning and end of the intervention period, they performed biopsies to assess gene expression of HAS-1 and COL1A1/COL1A2, which are related to Hyaluronic acid and collagen, respectively.
Analysis showed Pycnogenol intervention increased Collagen (COL1A1) by 29 percent, Collagen (COL1A2) by 41 percent and Hyaluronic Acid production by 44 percent. Hyaluronic acid binds large quantities of water in the skin and in other tissues, such as cartilage. Thus, the increased amount of Hyaluronic acid explains the increased skin hydration, higher elasticity and overall smoother skin appearance found in women taking Pycnogenol. The Most Potent Antioxidant Discovered
Astaxanthin is in a league of its own and has recently jumped to the front of the line in terms of its status as a “Super-Nutrient,” becoming the focus of a large and growing number of peer-reviewed scientific studies.
Patented and possessing multiple clinical trial studies, This Relatively unknown ingredient Astaxanthin is the most potent antioxidant yet discovered. This amazing natural ingredient has been found to be Results show that the quenching effect of Astaxanthin is:
- 500 times more powerful than vitamin E in neutralizing free radicals.
- 1000 times more effective than both Beta-Carotene (Vitamin A) and Lutein
Astaxanthin has been shown to be more effective than other carotenoids and other nutrients at ‘singlet oxygen quenching’. Singlet oxygen quenching gives protection from Photo-Aging! (Dark Sun Spots):
6000 Times Greater than Vitamin C in protecting the skin from exposure to UV light/radiation damage.
1000 Times More Effective than both Beta-Carotene (Vitamin A) and Lutein
800 Times Greater than Co-Q10
550 Times Greater than green tea catechins
500 Times More Powerful than vitamin E in neutralizing free radicals
75 Times Greater than Alpha-Lipoic Acid (ALA)

Most antioxidants, such as vitamin C, E and various others, can typically only handle one free radical at a time. But Astaxanthin can handle multiple free radicals simultaneously – in some cases more than 19 at the same time. Remember, free- radicals are the reason you are aging faster than you should.
A study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology compared the ability of Astaxanthin and placebos to protect skin against sun damage. Researchers found that after three months, Astaxanthin, not the placebo, visibly reduced fine lines and improved the appearance of skin exposed to sun. And, ultrasound measurements showed a 78-percent increase in skin density among those taking Astaxanthin. There were no side effects.
Harvested from micro-algae and responsible for the pink color of salmon, flamingos, shrimp and lobster, helping to prevent and reduce the visible signs of aging, diminish the look of skin irregularities, soothe irritation, normalize skin function and enhance the skin’s defensive cells. Astaxanthin is a key ingredient in Beautify’s skin care products.
The Best Skin Hydration Yet Discovered
Hyaluronic acid products act like a “moisture magnet” and are perfect for rehydrating dry, thirsty, aging skin. Hyaluronic Acid can hold up to 1000 times its own weight in water and has the amazing ability to attract and bind water molecules, keeping collagen hydrated and healthy and plumping, softening and smoothing skin.
Skin starts losing Hyaluronic acid as early as age 18, but wrinkles and other skin damage from Hyaluronic acid loss don’t generally show up until the late 30s or early 40s. By the time we reach 50 years of age, our bodies are producing about 50 percent less Hyaluronic acid than they did in youth.
With age, the body’s ability to produce its own Hyaluronic acid diminishes and topical application helps replenish the skin. Additionally, dry, dehydrated skin has the tendency to accentuate fine lines and wrinkles making the skin look old before its time. Beautify’s Hyaluronic acid products, blend this remarkable moisture binding agent with skin vitamins and botanicals to deliver and restore maximum hydration while helping reduce the visible signs of aging for a healthy youthful glow.
The Hyaluronic acid story got a big boost in November 2000, when ABC News’s Connie Chung reported on Yuzuri Hara, a Japanese village about two hours outside of Tokyo. According to the story, the villagers have a reputation for extraordinary longevity, and many of them live well into their 90s and even 100’s. Not only do they live longer, said the ABC News story, they also stay healthy, and are rarely plagued by health woes that are common to Americans, such as arthritis and heart disease. Interestingly, their skin appears smooth and supple, in spite of their common habits of frequent sun exposure and cigarette smoking. Watch the Video by Clicking Here
The loss of natural Hyaluronic acid is one of the causes of wrinkles, so the idea of putting HA back into the skin to repair wrinkles makes sense. Hyaluronic acid fillers are useful for reducing or removing wrinkles. By reducing wrinkles, Hyaluronic acid fillers make the skin look younger and increase skin tone, making it look smooth and supple.
Retinol (Vitamin A)
Fights Acne & Repairs Photo-Damaged Skin, Regenerates Collagen &
Elastin to Prevent Wrinkles
Retinyl Palmitate converts into Retinol (or Vitamin A), which in turn is converted into Retinoic Acid by specialized enzymes in the skin. Retinoic Acid facilitates communication between cells, encouraging aging cells to continue their renewal process, and regenerate collagen and elastin to prevent the appearance of aging skin, wrinkles, and fine lines. It is also effective at producing new, healthy skin cells to replace skin previously damaged by acne. However, Retinol cannot communicate with a cell until it has been broken down into Retinoic Acid. Once this breakdown has occurred, communication begins and the cells’ turnover rate increases, thus speeding up the production of collagen.
Retinyl Palmitate is considered a less irritating form of Retinol, and a gentler ingredient on sensitive skin. However, the reason Retinyl Palmitate may cause less irritation is because of the lengthier process that must take place for it to be converted into Retinoic Acid (otherwise known as Tretinoin), the active compound that creates the cell regeneration and exfoliation action within the skin. Retinyl Palmitate is considered an Exfoliator (albeit more gentle than pure Retinol), and its effect of repeatedly shedding the upper dermal layer forces the skin to produce new cells.
Peptides: Matrixyl 3000® & Argireline®
Two of the Best Collagen Growing Ingredients Known to Help Reduce Deep
Wrinkles & Lines
|Amino acids, the building blocks of proteins, can be combined together to form peptides. Two of these peptides, Matrixyl 3000® and Argireline® have been shown to help visibly reduce the look of deep lines and wrinkles while also promoting healthy skin tone, texture and resilience.
Clinically Proven to Reduce Wrinkles and Improve Your Skin
Matrixyl 3000® is the improved version of Matrixyl and has two peptides – think Collagen Growth! The two peptides complement each other so well; they exponentially increase your results! According to Sederma, the synergy between Palmitoyl Oligopeptide and Palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7 is dramatic. They reported a tissue culture study where Matrixyl 3000 increased the synthesis of skin matrix roughly 2.5 – 3.5 times. In particular, the synthesis of collagen (type I) increased by 258%, fibronectin – by 164% and Hyaluronic acid – by 179% – all the components that make you skin firm, smooth and healthy!

The Alternative to Botox – Clinically Proven
Research published in the “International Journal of Cosmetic Science” in October 2002 reported Argireline reduced wrinkle depth in women by 30% after 30 days of use without the risks posed by injections. Another study in 2009 by the Mahidol University found the exact same results.
Incredible Skin Firming Anti-Oxidant
As an antioxidant, vitamin C protects the water-soluble structures of the skin from free radical damage and aids in protecting the cell membranes by recycling vitamin E. Additionally, vitamin C stimulates collagen growth to maintain and improve skin tone, firmness, flexibility, and elasticity. It also assists in modulating the inflammatory response and is known for evening out pigmentation.
This stable water-soluble non-irritating form of vitamin C penetrates right down to the deeper layers of the skin where collagen and other important support structures are produced. C-Ester® is a unique patented vitamin C complex that contains vitamin C plus minerals and bioactive metabolites to enhance the penetration and bioavailability of vitamin C.
As with all Beautify formulas, our Ester-C® products are fortified with additional botanicals and skin vitamins to enhance the product’s effectiveness.
Alpha Lipoic Acid ( ALA)
Miracle in a Jar Anti-Oxidant Clinically Proven to Reduce Signs of Photo-
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, ALA has been referred to as “the miracle in a jar. The benefits of ALA surpass other Anti-Oxidants like Vitamin C and E. Alpha-Lipoic Acid is a potent antioxidant that may guard against skin damage as well as repair existing damaging
ALA can help exfoliate the skin by sloughing off dead skin cells which makes way for new skin to appear. A Swedish study published in October 2003 in the British Journal of Dermatology found a 5 percent solution of ALA applied for 12 weeks reduced signs of photo-aging like wrinkles and skin roughness. The term photo-aging describes skin damage caused by long-term exposure to the sun. Photoaging can make you appear older than your actual or chronological age. The research was headed by H. Beitner of the Department of Dermatology, Karolinska Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden.
Most Antioxidants work only in water (such as vitamin C) or fatty tissues (such as vitamin E), but Alpha-Lipoic Acid is both fat and water-soluble. This means it can work throughout the body. Antioxidants in the body are used up as they attack free radicals, but evidence suggests Alpha-Lipoic Acid may help regenerate these other antioxidants and make them active again.
What makes ALA special as an antioxidant is its versatility. It helps deactivate a wide array of cell damaging free radicals and recycles other antioxidants, making them much more effective. In particular, ALA helps protect the mitochondria and our DNA. As we age, mitochondrial function is impaired and this contributes to the adverse effects of aging.
Some clinical studies show that high potency Alpha Lipoic Acid applied topically can reduce wrinkles, minimize fine lines and improve the texture of the skin overall to create a youthful appearance.
Excellent Anti-Oxidant Improving Skin Hydration, Creates Soft, Healthy
Skin. Helps Lighten Brown Age Spots
Vitamin E oil has an amazing anti-aging effect on skin. Its antioxidant properties further fight off damaging effects of free radicals and minimizes the chances of appearances of new wrinkles and helps retain moisture. For these reasons, vitamin E is used as a key ingredient in the Beautify.
Naturally present in the skin, Vitamin E has been used in clinical dermatology as a treatment for a variety of skin conditions including eczema, atopic dermatitis, superficial burns, and inflammatory skin diseases (Panin, Strumia, and Ursini, 2004). Vitamin E helps moisturize the skin and optimize skin health.
When applied topically to brown spots on the skin, it helps to lighten and smooth the rough skin by lubricating cell membranes and encouraging cell regeneration. Brown spots on the skin are caused by aging, free radical damage, typically from too much sun. Vitamin E oil prevents and repairs free radical damage.
Vitamin E helps maintain the barrier function by locking moisture into the skin and preventing dehydration. Vitamin E is an excellent and intense moisturizer to help keep skin healthy and soft. One function of the epidermis is called the barrier function. Our skin has a natural barrier, a waterproof seal that keeps moisture in the skin and prevents evaporation. Both the natural aging process and environmental influences cause the barrier to break down, allowing skin to lose moisture and become dry.
Please note: We purchase all of our Vitamin E from an award-winning manufacturer in Switzerland that is known for its quality control and is listed amongst the top leaders of sustainable companies in the world.
Excellent Skin Hydration & Improves Skin Softness & Elasticity
Provitamin B5 is a humectant–a water-binding substance that attracts and retains water. As a humectant, Provitamin B5 stabilizes the skin barrier function, reducing the amount of water lost through the skin. By applying a Provitamin B5 formulation to the skin, you will not only increase its hydration, but improve its softness and elasticity, making Provitamin B5 ideal for the treatment of dry, scaly or rough skin.
A 2002 the Journal of Dermatological Treatment performed a study on skin disorders found that topical B5 combats aging and acne by improving skin hydration, maintaining skin elasticity, and increasing skin softness. The study also suggested that B5 has anti-inflammatory properties, making it useful in the treatment of skin scaling, roughness, and dryness. When pro-vitamin B5 is topically applied to wrinkles, it plumps the creases and dents right back up with a burst of hydration! Pro-vitamin B5! It keeps skin soft and radiant, and it gives it that extra dewey glow that is so sought after these days.
Its Provitamin, Panthenol (also known as Provitamin B5), is the alcohol form of vitamin B5. When lotions, creams, ointments and formulations containing Provitamin B5 are applied to and absorbed by the skin, this Provitamin is transformed into vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid), which has natural broad abilities to moisturize, soothe, heal and regenerate the skin.
Decreases Dark Spots, Creates Even Skin Tone
Active plant cells, called plant stem cells, have been encouraged to do what they naturally do, only in an amplified manner. For example, “Bright Light” Madonna Lily has been shown to inhibit melanogenesis (the production of melanin that causes tanning, freckles or brown spots). This inherent melanin-inhibiting characteristic has been magnified in the plant stem cell when compared to the original plant.
Much safer than Hydroquinone, a dangerous bleaching chemical, which has been banned in most of the World, except the U.S. Madonna Lily naturally and safely decreases dark spots for a more even skin tone and a lighter, brighter complexion. known to help regenerate and increase cellular renewal making it an ideal skin-lightening and anti-aging skin care ingredient.
You must be wearing sunscreen everyday and exfoliate to ensure a complete melanin inhibiting process. We recommend Beautify World Best Natural Sunscreen & Beautify Radiance Microdermabrasion for best results.
Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)
Reverses the Appearance of Discoloration, Improves Skin’s Moisture
Barrier, Enhances Production of Collagen
Niacinamide improves skin’s moisture barrier—and this helps allow for the natural production of collagen. It also strengthens the outermost layer of skin (Called the stratum corneum). It also increases the rate of skin surface renewal to help reverse the appearance of past damage such as discoloration or the look of enlarged pores.
Commonly known as Vitamin B3, Niacinamide at 2% has been shown to reduce water loss in the skin and retain fatty acid levels (younger, plumper, firmer skin). It has also been proven at high concentrations (between 3-4%) to be a very effective acne reducer. Clinical research has shown Niacinamide to be just as effective as the topical antibiotic Clindamycin at treating acne. Obviously Niacinamide doesn’t run the risk of resistance, since it is not an antibiotic.
Niacinamide is also an excellent skin lightening agent that works by disrupting the transfer of melanosome from the melanocyte to the keratinocyte. I blogged about this months ago, but there was a study done by Procter & Gamble that proved that the combination of Niacinamide and glucosamine (N-Acetyl Glucosamine) demonstrated significant skin lightening in patients. This revelation was pretty big, and was presented at the 2006 American Academy of Dermatology. Here is an interesting link showing before & after pictures of patients as well as details regarding the research: http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2006-06/msl-sfn063006.php
In general, most individuals saw results after 12 weeks of daily usage (and saw a reduction of 35-68% of pigmentation). Like with most other skin lightening compounds, Niacinamide has an inhibitory effect and in order to get the most out of it, you must be wearing sunscreen everyday and exfoliate to ensure a complete melanin inhibiting process. We recommend Beautify World Best Natural Sunscreen & Beautify Radiance Microdermabrasion for best results.
Natural Dark Age Spot Inhibitor, Corrects Uneven Skin Tone
Alpha-Arbutin give three main properties; Whitening effects, anti-age effects and UVB/UVC filter.
Alpha-Arbutin is a skin whitening agent which is very popular in Orient skin de-pigmentation. Alpha-Arbutin inhibits the formation of melanin pigment by inhibiting Tyrosinase activity. Alpha-Arbutin protects the skin against damage caused by free radicals.
Much safer than Hydroquinone, a dangerous bleaching chemical, which has been banned in many countries around the world, except the U.S. Arbutin is very safe skin agent for external use which does not have toxicity, stimulation, unpleasant odor or side effect such as Hydroqinone. The encapsulation of Arbutin constitute a delivery system to potentialize the effect in time. It is a way to incorporate the hydrophilic Arbutin in lipophilic media.
One of the prime sources for Alpha-Arbutin is a small evergreen bush called the Bearberry (See Bearberry). Bearberry, being natural, grows over most or the Northern hemisphere and is most often found in mountainous areas.
You must be wearing sunscreen everyday and exfoliate to ensure a complete melanin inhibiting process. We recommend Beautify World’s Best Natural Sunscreen & Beautify DermaRadiance Microdermabrasion for best results.
Skin Lightening/Natural Sunscreen
Bearberry (Uva-Ursi) has a natural whitening effect on the skin, making bearberry perfect for those want to treat freckles, brown age spots, andMelasma. Bearberry can dramatically change the tone and color of the skin. Because of the powerful whitening effects.
With Bearberry, you can enjoy the sun, reverse the signs of sun damage, and protect against further damage of the sun.
Bearberry contains a natural form of hydroquinone. The difference with this natural form of hydroquinone lies within its composition. The cytotoxic (cell death and mutations) abilities of synthetic hydroquinone (the kind used in skin bleaching creams) is not present in bearberry extract. Bearberry extract does produce hydroquinone (the actual melanin inhibiting agent) but has an antioxidant property due to the anthocyamin presence (something in which other forms of hydroquinone do not have). It is also much more stable than a synthetic form of hydroquinone, so it doesn’t become pro-oxidant when exposed to sunlight
Bearberry can be combined with other ingredients in cosmetics to have a subtle effect on the skin. This way, the bearberry will be mild enough to lighten problem areas without overbleaching. Used regularly, bearberry can remove the most stubborn pigmented areas of the skin.
Bearberry also increases the cell turnover rate and it is an excellent antioxidant. It works to fight free radicals, preventing additional skin conditions, and works as a natural sunscreen.
Leading Natural Skin Ingredient for Skin Whitening
Papaya has become known as a leading ingredient in skin whitening products because it contains Papain, a natural enzyme that promotes skin renewal and cell turnover. It helps in exfoliating the skin to reveal newer cells, and has restorative properties that soften the skin.
Papaya is rich in antioxidant vitamins A, E and C, and other antioxidants that help in giving skin the moisture and protection it needs. The high levels of these valuable nutrients can help protect your skin against free radicals known to cause damage that leads to wrinkles and other visible signs of aging.
The enzyme Papain in the flesh and skin of the fruit actually breaks down dead skin cells and helps promote skin renewal when used topically on the face or body. Papaya can improve your skin’s texture, elasticity and appearance. They may also help with wound healing and burns and even assist in the treatment of skin problems like acne, blemishes and age spots.
Reduces Dark Spots & Signs of Skin Aging, Hydrates Skin
According to Avocado.com, avocados reduce the appearance of age spots, help reduce signs of skin aging and heals dry skin and eczema. Large amounts of sterolins, a protein proven to reduce the appearance of age spots, scars and sun damage, are found in avocados. Avocado oil contains the highest amount of sterolins in the fruit, making it an ideal ingredient in skin moisturizers marketed to people with dry or damaged skin.
Avocado oil also increases the amount of collagen found in the skin. Avocado.com reports that a loss of collagen in the skin occurs in the natural aging process and avocado oil helps to slow that process down. Collagen plump fine lines and wrinkles. Avocados do not clog pores.
In skin care, the two major advantages of the avocado are its marked softening and soothing nature and its notable absorption. Compared with almond, corn, olive, and soybean oils, avocado oil had the highest skin penetration rate (Swisher, 1988 in Regenerative Nutrition).
One of the great advantages of avocado oil is that its hydrating ability is excellent as is easily and deeply absorbed into the skin. Its ability to retain water on top of it other chemical properties, its oil acts as an emollient, and promotes soft and supple tissue. Itchiness due to dry skin can be resolved using avocado-based lotions and cosmetics.
Promotes Glowing, Healthy Younger-Looking Skin
There sufficient scientific studies have been done in Europe and the United States to know that this oil has the unique ability to promote the formation of new skin tissue and that it possesses anti-inflammatory, anti-neuralgic, antibiotic and antioxidant properties. It is a deep penetrating oil that can be used for everything from anti-aging. It promotes glowing, healthy younger-looking skin, It is also known to help acne, scarring, psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis, stretch marks, age spots and skin blemishes generally through to dry or scaly skin, and wrinkles. Tamanu Oil has been used secretly by some of the super models going back as far as Lauren Hutton. It smoothes and softens the skin, helping you achieve a clear, fresh looking complexion. It also maintains the elasticity and firmness of the skin.
The real healing power of this traditional topical oil is its unique ability to promote the formation of new tissue, thereby accelerating wound healing and the growth of healthy skin (anti-aging). The scientific term for this process is “cicatrization”.
This sacred ingredient is also used for helping to resolve cuts, scrapes, burns, swelling, sores, acne, rashes, blisters, insect bites, eczema and Rosacea. Additionally, research shows Tamanu demonstrates antioxidant activity that can help protect from oxidative damage and reduce the visible appearance of scars.
BioScience Laboratories conducted a study of Tamanu Oil’s ability to improve the appearance of scars. Six subjects with obvious scars aged for one year or more participated in the test. Subjects were not allowed to use moisturizers on their scarred areas for seven days before the test or throughout the nine-week test period. Scars were rated for roughness, length, width and degree of difference from surrounding normal skin. Measurements of darkness and redness were also taken for the same scarred and surrounding normal skin. Digital photos of scars were taken prior to initial application and at the end of week nine, Tamanu Oil was applied to the scarred area twice daily for nine consecutive weeks. There was significant improvement in appearance of scars after six weeks, and improvement continued through week nine. Scar length was reduced by an average 0.28 centimeters, and width was reduced by an average 0.12 centimeters. [Beausoleil]

An Anti-Oxidant Clinically Proven to Tighten & Firm Skin
DMAE is an Anti-Oxidant membrane stabilizer. It helps to firm, smooth, and brighten skin. It also enhances the effects of other antioxidants like Alpha-Lipoic Acid (ALA) and Vitamin C-Ester.
DMAE has become a popular skin-firming ingredient. Youthful skin is firm because the muscle fibers under skin are short, thick and taut. As we age, muscle fibers under the skin lengthen and loosen. Skin sags and becomes thinner. As an alternative to cosmetic surgery, DMAE is a gentler and natural alternative.
A 2005 research review from the American Journal of Clinical Dermatology states that DMAE may help increase skin firmness and curb inflammation in skin. In their analysis of previously published research on the use of DMAE in skin care, the review’s authors found that DMAE also may help reduce fine lines and improve the overall appearance of aging skin. What’s more, DMAE does not appear to cause adverse effects (such as peeling and dryness).

Top Rated Anti-Oxidant – Increases Collagen and Elastin
The aging of our skin is caused due to the harmful free radicals. The CoQ10 enzymes are antioxidants which destroy these radicals thus, reducing the rate of the process of aging. Besides this, the enzyme also increases the level of collagen and elastin, which is responsible for maintaining the elasticity and flexibility of the skin. CoQ10 has excellent anti-aging benefits.
Numerous independent studies conclude that Ubiquinone has the ability to:
1. Help shield our skin from environmental damage
2. Improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
3. Help reduce dryness
4. Smooth skin texture.
This is because when researchers tested and compared the efficacy of six of the most potent antioxidants known to science (including a Ubiquinone derivative); their effects on preventing free-radical skin-damage, Ubiquinone received a score of 95 out of 100. This is the highest score among all of the six leading antioxidants. (Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology)
Once we reach the age of 30 years, the level of the CoQ10 (Ubiquinone) in our body starts reducing. This means that the skin does not receive any nutrients, so it starts aging. In order to prevent the aging of the skin and to keep it healthy, we have a skin care line that supplements for the loss of the same in our body. Also known as Coenzyme Q10. The synthetic version is called Ubiquinone, which Beautify does not use because it is not natural.
To further boost our skin’s ability to erase the appearance of wrinkles and other signs of aging, anti-aging Beautify has another ultra-powerful antioxidant Ubiquinone. Most scientists say that this antioxidant clearly out-shines all other antioxidants.
A few cosmetic companies put Ubiquinone or its patented derivative Idebenone by itself and then claim that their product fights all causes of aging. Even though Ubiquinone is a very powerful antioxidant, we must remember that one ingredient cannot “do it all.”
Superfruit with Remarkable Anti-Aging Benefits
Pomegranate is often referred to as a ‘Superfruit’ because of its superior reputation for being rich in nutrients and antioxidants. Extracts of the fruit contain anti-inflammatory and anti-aging benefits that help prevent fine lines, firm the skin’s epidermis and reduce free radical damage.
Source: (Syed, Malik, Hadi, Sarfaraz, Afaq and Mukhtar, 2005)
It is also excellent for helping to provide a natural protection from the sun and resolve the effects of sun damage. Additionally, Pomegranate can help protect and boost collagen and promote regeneration of the dermis helping to reduce the signs of aging while moisturizing and nourishing your skin. Increases the Cell Turnover Giving Clearer Skin
Salicylic Acid is a popular and well-recommended treatment for acne, psoriasis, keratosis pilaris and other skin conditions. A Beta Hydroxy Acid derived from natural willowbark, Salicylic Acid increases the cellular turnover rate, leading to faster skin renewal and fewer clogged pores, which is the primary cause of many skin issues.
With mild antibiotic properties, Salicylic Acid is often preferred by those with more sensitive skin to Alpha Hydroxy Acids due to the fact that it is gentler on the skin while offering the same cell-sloughing results.
Use Beautify All-Natural sunscreen daily when using products containing Salicylic Acid.
Alpha-Hydroxy-Acids (AHA): Stimulates Collagen Improving Wrinkles,
Fine Lines & Other Forms of Sun Damage
Glycolic acid is the most active and beneficial of the Alpha-Hydroxy-Acids (AHA) used in skin care and is derived from sugar cane. Studies have shown glycolic acid to be the most effective fruit acid for cosmetic application. It has the smallest molecular structure of all AHAs, thus possesses the greatest penetration potential.
Inside the cell, it stimulates the collagen and elastin fibers in the dermis, improving the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and other forms of sun damage. Due to this unique mechanism of action, glycolic acid has also been found to be beneficial for the management of conditions involving hyperkeratinization, e.g.: psoriasis, ichthyosis, acne, dry skin, etc. Anyone suffering from these skin disorders would benefit greatly from the use of glycolic acid. It’s a fundamental part of a skin care maintenance program that will keep your skin healthy throughout the years.
A Powerful Antioxidant Known to Slow the Signs of Aging
Green Tree Benefits
1. Fights Free Radicals
2. Neutralizes the damage done by exposure to UV rays
3. May prevent developing squamous cell carcinoma
4. Rejuvenates old skin cells that were at the end of their life cycle
5. A powerful anti-inflammatory effect – works great on sensitive, red skin
6. Great on Blemishes & breakouts – Proven to be as good as benzoyl peroxide cream in treating acne conditions with fewer side effects.
In many of our formulations, Green Tea has been included for its synergistic roll and potent antioxidant benefits for the skin. When applied topically, research shows that this powerful ingredient contains strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties to help slow the signs of aging. Because it is rich in polyphenols, these also help eliminate free radicals, prevent oxidative stress, protect skin from UVA and UVB radiation damage and reduce the number of sunburned cells.
A 2003 study published in the American Chemical Society discovered that green tea prevents skin cancer by blocking the harmful enzyme junk-2. A recent 2007 study conducted in the UK revealed that those who drank two or more cups a day had a 65% lower risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma
One study, performed in 2003 by Dr. Stephen Hsu of the Medical College of Georgia Department of Oral Biology, found that green tea was able to rejuvenate old skin cells that were at the end of their life cycle. To quote Dr. Hsu from his 2003 paper: Thus, we report here for the first time, that at certain concentrations, EGCG or a mixture of the major green tea polyphenols stimulated aged keratinocytes to generate biological energy and to synthesize DNA, possibly for renewed cell division.
Therefore, green tea constituents may be useful topically for promoting skin regeneration, wound healing, or treatment of certain epithelial conditions such as aphthous ulcers, psoriasis, rosacea, and actinic keratosis.
Dr. Hsu commented afterwards: “Cells that migrate toward the surface of the skin normally live about 28 days, and by day 20, they basically sit on the upper layer of the skin getting ready to die.” “But EGCG (Green Tea) reactivates them.
A 2003 study carried out by Dr. Jennifer Gan-Wong of Memorial Medical Center in the Philippines showed that green tea cream was as good as benzoyl peroxide cream in treating acne conditions with fewer side effects.
Green Tea is the remarkable Universal Anti-Oxidant.
Superior Skin Healing and Moisturizer
Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) is a potent antibacterial, antifungal, and natural antiseptic. Recent studies have also attributed this therapeutic herb with antiviral capabilities. Excellent for Oil Control, Keeps Your Skin Clear
Jojoba (pronounced ho-HO-ba) is a botanical extract of the seed of the jojoba tree. What’s interesting about it is that it isn’t actually an oil, but rather what they call a wax ester. Why do we care? Because out of all of the compounds in nature, this wax ester is the most similar to human skin oil (sebum). It is theorized that applying jojoba to the skin can “trick” the skin into thinking it is producing enough oil, thus balancing oil production. Jojoba offers an ideal skin solution for you if you suffer from acne-riddled, prematurely aging or otherwise problematic skin. Great for Oily and Combo Skin.
The bottom line for us is that jojoba oil is non-comedogenic so we can use it without fear. Jojoba oil is extracted from the seed of the jojoba tree, Simmondsia chinenis), a perennial shrub that grows wild in the semi-arid Sonoran Desert region of Mexico, the southwestern United States, Australia, Israel and South America. It is commercially grown in plantations all over the world.

Natural Extract Fights Inflammation & Locks in Moisture
Witch hazel helps reduce swelling, help repair broken skin, and fight bacteria. One of witch hazel’s most impressive properties is its anti-inflammatory effects. Inflammation is caused by free radicals in skin cells, and scientists at Japan’s Shiga Central Laboratory studied 65 plant extracts for their potential anti-inflammatory applications as an anti-aging treatment for skin. Only two of the extracts exhibited active oxygen-scavenging effects and protective activity against cell damage, with one being Hamamelis Virginiana AKA Witch Hazel.
Women frequently use Witch Hazel to lock moisture into skin. A study at the University Hospital Luebeck Dermatology Department in Germany treated children suffering from skin disorders and injuries with a Hamamelis ointment and found that it was safe and as effective as dexpanthenol. Dexpanthenola is a prescription drug used as a moisturizer to improve hydration of the stratum corneum, or outer skin layer, to reduce water loss from skin and to maintain skin softness and elasticity.

Clinically Proven to Improve Wrinkles & Collagen Growth
Ginseng, a plant extract, can help balance the oil gland production and can smooth fine lines and wrinkles in mature skin. Promoted as an anti-aging skin treatment, ginseng contains a large number of phytonutrients. These phytonutrients can stimulate and activate the skin’s metabolism and blood flow to regenerate and tone. It can also brighten the whiteness of skin. Here is some info on a controlled study:
Healthy female subjects over 40 years and less than 70 years of age were tested in a randomized, double-blind study. Facial wrinkles, elasticity, redness, pigmentation and water content of outer skin layer were measured at baseline, 12 and 24 weeks. Other analyses were done to test things like collagen production.
Among 86 female subjects, 82 completed the study. The participants were in the 40 to 70 age group. Ginseng extract significantly improved facial wrinkles in the subjects. Collagen production was enhanced in the subjects who took the ginseng mixture. The elasticity of the skin was not changed upon usage of the ginseng extract although fibrillin-1, a component of elastic fiber, was significantly elongated.

Clinically Proven to Help Sun Damaged Skin, Reduce Puffiness &
Inflammation, & Dark Circles
The University of Washington in Seattle recently conducted a study, which they exposed healthy skin cells and UV damaged skin cells to caffeine. The caffeine caused the damaged cells to die while not hurting the healthy cells. This study was published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology.
The second is actually a number of studies that point to caffeine’s anti-inflammatory properties. When inflammation occurs, we see color changes, and redness develops. So the theory is that if caffeine is placed under the eye, then it can help reduce puffiness and dark circles caused by inflammation.
Caffeine as an antioxidant – oxidation is a process that causes a lot of problems for the skin, oxidation is a process that causes skin cancers to come out. Caffeine, as a skin care ingredient, acts as an excellent anti-oxidant.
Caffeine, coffee’s most well-known ingredient, works on skin in the three primary ways: as a vasoconstrictor, an antioxidant, and a diuretic. Caffeine dehydrates fat cells, making the skin smoother. It’s also used in de-puffing eye gels as a vasoconstrictor, to temporarily tighten skin and reduce dark circles.
A Great Natural Ingredient Skin Rejuvenation
Yarrow extract is an excellent natural active ingredient stimulating regeneration of new skin cells balances skin functions making it a great natural ingredient to fight acne, blemishes and oily skin. It soothes itchy, dry skin, relieving minor skin irritations, healing damaged skin and. Yarrow has strong moisturizing action on the skin.
Yarrow is attributed with astringent, or cleansing, tonic, and stimulant effects, and is antimicrobial, providing
protection against infection.
Fatty acids found in Yarrow boost the oxygen content in skin cells, aid cell membrane development, strength, and function. Amino acids provide the basic building blocks of proteins in the production of tissue thus skin has the ability to regenerate giving you healthier looking skin.
Salicylic acid have analgesic, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral properties, it is considered a highly beneficial constituent to treat acne prone skin. While sterols and tannins have wound healing
and anti-inflammatory properties.
The high amounts of flavonoids in Yarrow are vital antioxidants that protect against cell-damaging free radicals.
The main constituents of Yarrow are: isovaleric acid, salicylic acid, asparagin, sterols, flavonoids, bitters, tannins, and coumarins.
Yarrow (Achillea Millefolium) is a native plant to the Northern Hemisphere. The plant has a long history as a powerful ‘healing herb’ used topically to speed wound healing, and improve other skin conditions such as rashes and abrasions, calm inflamed skin.
Strengthens the Walls of Capillaries, Improves Roscea
Horse chestnut extract contains a saponin called escin, which has anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, escin strengthens the walls of the veins and arteries, giving it vaso-protective properties. In the 1980’s, Germany began serious studies on this ancient herb and eventually they found that horse chestnut extract was beneficial for treatment of diseases of leg veins like varicose veins and broken capillaries – Roscea.
The condition of capillaries is improved because horse chestnut extract reduces the presence of elastase and hyaluronidase, which are enzymes that break down protein. Horse Chestnut also provides a firming effect on the skin.
The horse chestnut tree, also known as the aesculus hippocastanum, is a large, deciduous hardwood tree that grows in temperate climates. It has large, green leaves with five to seven lobes and white flowers.
Anti-Oxidant Helps with Blemishs, Dry Skin, Roscea & Gives Skin a Natural Glow
Milk thistle is a natural herb that offers many major benefits. It helps with inflammation, and acne. It also helps with dry skin and eczema. It gives your skin a natural glow. It also helps with Roscea and UVB damage. This herb is also said to be high in antioxidants, which are great for overall good skin.
Milk Thistle is said to have the ability to encourage the mucus membranes to lubricate further. This is thought to calm inflammation and reduce eczema flare-ups. Eczema can produce dry, cracking, painful skin. According to Skyeherbals, Milk Thistle can improve skin moisture. The dramatic change in skin moisture could potentially heal the effects of eczema.
Based on the theory that milk thistle cleanses the liver and blood, it is suggested that these benefits will extend to the skin. By reducing internal impurities, you may be clarifying your skin. This change may be visible in an overall improvement in skin texture and appearance.
Milk thistle is said to have anti-inflammatory traits. To diminish the appearance of blemishs, you may find an anti-inflammatory helpful. It is claimed that milk thistle helps lessen redness of the skin. It is also believed that the cleansing properties milk thistle offers the liver will benefit the skin. Research suggests that this herb may help to clear up existing acne as well as prevent new forms of acne from occurring.
Double-blind study: Helps with Roscea and Blocks UVB damage
Milk thistle is also a popular herbal ingredient in topical creams, due to its antioxidant and cooling properties. In a double-blind study done on patients suffering from Stage I–III rosacea, patients were treated for one month with a topical cream containing silymarin, the powerhouse antioxidant component in Milk Thistle. A significant improvement in skin redness, papules, itching, hydration, and skin color occurred. In another study focusing on UV-induced Oxidative Stress, “Silymarin inhibited UV-induced oxidative stress in both epidermal and dermal cells.” Its ability to block free radicals within the body can apparently also translate into topical skin creams as well, shielding the skin from UVB damage.
Clinically Proven to Help with Melasma & Roscea. Helps Acne, Dry Skin
and Lighten Dark Age Spots
Licorice root extract, a natural antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory herbal product with demulcent properties, may help some skin conditions like eczema, dermatitis and acne. Licorice contains anti-oxidants, which help protect your skin from sun damage and from exposure to the elements. It helps skin lightening and whitening and improves the appearance of minor facial discolorations.
Published in the International Journal of Dermatology in 2000, a clinical trial involving people with Melasma found that those who applied a cream containing the licorice extract liquiritin twice each day for one month experienced a 70-percent improvement in their condition. Licorice is more expensive than some of the other commonly used skin-soothing agents.
The increased incidence of skin conditions and the desire to use natural products to treat them has led to clinical studies evaluating the composition and clinical usefulness of natural products in the treatment of inflammatory skin dermatoses. The Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, July edition reports that licorice among other natural products is effective for use in treatment of Rosacea, atopic dermatitis, sensitive and irritated skin, drug-induced skin eruptions, and psoriasis.
Licorice Root contains a number of healthy compounds such as flavonoids, volatile oils, plant sterols, coumarins, glycosides, asparagine, chalcones, glycyrrhizic acid and anethole.
An Outstanding Anti-Oxidant Helping Revitalize & Hydrate Skin
The peach is an outstanding source of anti-oxidants. These slow down the onslaught of aging and skin damage. Peaches supply large amounts of carotenes, flavonoids, and potassium as well as Vitamin A, C and Selenium. Also, they provide liberal amounts of lycopene and lutein. These vitamins & Minerals help revitalize and hydrate your epidermis. The antioxidants help wounds recover faster and prevents signs of early aging.
Vitamin C boosts the production of collagen, a compound that gives your skin elasticity, and you get this vitamin in peaches. In addition to the influence the vitamin C in peaches has on collagen, it also works with protein to improve your immune system, helping to ward off skin infections.
The Vitamin A in peaches may also contribute to cancer prevention. A study published in the March 2004 issue of “Clinical Cancer Research” indicates that high doses of vitamin A reduced the risk of some skin cancers by 32 percent.
Phenomenal UV Radiation & Sun Protection
According to Dr. Marilynn Syrett, zinc oxide is one of the safest ingredients for naturally protecting our skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) rays. UV rays penetrate the skin and damage tissue, speeding up the aging process and drying the skin out. These rays also increase the risk skin cancer. Sunscreens containing zinc oxide filter out UV rays, keeping them from penetrating the skin and causing cell damage.
The sun rays are comprised of two types of ultraviolet radiation – UVA and UVB. Zinc oxide provides superior protection against UVB, long wave UVA and short wave UVA radiation. In fact, it is the only ingredient that protects against all three types of radiation.
The UVA rays penetrate deep within the skin surface and cause damage to the elastic tissues thus accelerating the process of photoaging (skin aging as a result of sun exposure). It also weakens the immune system and increases the risk of skin cancer like melanoma.
UVB rays damage the upper most epidermis layer of the skin and harm the DNA structure of the skin cells. This is because they encourage the formation of oncogenes, genes that transform normal cells into malignant cells, that leads to basal or squamous cell cancer.
Zinc oxide is also effective for healing the skin. It can be used to heal wounds, reduce the tenderness associated with sunburns and soften chapped skin. Jonathan Moore, DPM notes that people who are zinc deficient typically experience slower wound healing times. When zinc oxide is applied to the wound area, it provides the body with the extra zinc it needs to repair skin cells. Zinc oxide helps keep the wound area moist and clean.
Astringent Lotions and creams containing zinc oxide are effective skin astringents, says Dr. Syrett. You can apply zinc oxide to keep excess oils from forming on the surface. It is sometimes used as an acne treatment–it is believed to reduce the appearance of blemishes and reduce skin irritation and inflammation, reducing the number and severity of acne breakouts.
A Super-Fruit Touted as One of the Best Wrinkle Fighting Extracts on the
Planet Helping to Firm & Tighten Your Skin
Touted as one of the best wrinkle fighting foods on the planet, Acai berry (pronounced aww-si-ee) has one of the highest ORAC (antioxidant) values around. It’s been labeled a Superfruit because of its incredible power to fight one of the most damaging free radicals, superoxide.
Superoxide free radicals have the ability to damage molecules within the skin, including the crucial collagen and elastin proteins which keep the skin firm, tight, and strong. The antioxidants in Acai scavenge these destructive free radicals helping to cease their path of destruction.
Acai is also packed with other free radical fighting antioxidants. In fact the Acai berry is reported to have twice the antioxidant activity as another known Superfruit, the blueberry. Acai is rich in Vitamin E, which promotes tissue regeneration.
Anti-Aging and Free Radicals
We know that Acai berry has anti-aging benefits: regenerative nutrients and those wonderful antioxidants make sure that this is the case. All this goodness helps to ensure that your cells are operating to the best of their abilities, and that there are no other chemicals or foreign bodies preventing them for doing just this. This links in with Acai’s free-radical fighting ability which has already been discussed in detail.
Specific Skin Benefits
Rather than simply rely on general descriptions of the overall benefits of Acai on the body to prove this point, we can now move on to some benefits which specifically help the skin. The benefits come from the hugely beneficial effects that antioxidants, anthocyanins and phytosterols have on our bodies; there should probably be no surprise from learning that they help the skin stay healthy as well as the rest of the body.
Reduction of erosion of the skin’s protective coating.
An impressive guarding job is done by the phytosterols in Acai. Your skin’s protective coating helps prevent the cells from dying so quickly, and helps to keep out any unwanted invaders. All this adds up to the fact that your skin is going to look younger and healthier for longer.
Defends against the accumulation of premature wrinkles.
The anthocyanins and phytosterols in Acai act as an astringent, keeping the skin taut and helping to protect the connective tissues in your skin. Tighter, more supple skin means fewer wrinkles.
Acai berries may help the skin stay younger-looking because of a very beneficial as an ingredient that has strong antioxidant capabilities. Antioxidants work to scavenge cell-damaging free radicals that help age the skin, so The Drugs.com site adds that Acai berries are also used as an anti-inflammatory. Acai berries are also showing promise as an ingredient in skin care products, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine website or PubMed.gov.
PubMed.gov describes how various herbal and natural substances have been tested since 1990 for their effects as skin care product ingredients. The article explains that and as an aid in treating Hyperpigmentation, or discoloration of the skin. The article says more research is ongoing, but the potential is promising. Another research study supporting the antioxidant effects of Acai berries is discussed on the University of Florida News website. In that article, clinical studies seem to support the claims that Acai berries have strong antioxidant properties.

Lemon & Lime Essential Oil
Helps Clear Skin Problems and Oily Skin – A Great Source of Vitamin C
Both Lemon and Limes essential oils are full of anti-oxidants and other beneficial nutrients. The health benefits of lime essential oil is in its use as a antiseptic, antiviral, antibacterial, and astringent helps clear skin problems such as acne and oily skin.
Lemons and limes are an excellent source of Vitamin C one of the most important antioxidants in nature. Vitamin C is one of the main antioxidants found in food and the primary water-soluble antioxidant in the body. Lemons and limes contain unique flavonoid compounds that have antioxidant and anti-cancer properties.
Of special interest in limes have been flavonoids called flavonol glycosides, including many kaempferol-related molecules. While these flavonoids have been shown to stop cell division in many cancer cell lines, they are perhaps most interesting for their antibiotic effects.
Fights Acne and Inflammation
Lavender oil is antiseptic—it kills bacteria—and also an anti-inflammatory. These two properties allow lavender oil to both attack the bacteria causing the acne infections and also reduce the swelling and general skin inflammation. Lavender is one of the gentlest essential oils for the skin; some of its skin benefits include that of being antiseptic and anti-fungal which helps to reduce scarring and speeds healing. It is also an anti-inflammatory and circulatory stimulant.
|Your skin benefits when bacteria are kept in check due to the antiseptic properties of Lavender essential oil. This means you will have fewer breakouts and infections. Your skin heals faster too!|
Anti-inflammatory properties. When inflammation is reduced there is less skin redness and blotchiness of the complexion. Your skin looks more evenly colored which benefits your appearance.
Lastly, when the circulatory system is enhanced by the use of this essential oil an increase in blood flow means more nutrients being brought to the skin along with much needed oxygen to the cells. This is essential to healthier cells, and benefits more frequent cell turnover.
All of these essential skin benefits of Lavender Oil work together, which makes for glowing healthy looking skin.
Collagen Enhancer Improving Skin Tone and Wrinkles
With anti-aging amino acids, it just might be possible to reduce signs of aging. The secret to anti-aging amino acids is Neuropeptides, which affect cells by improving intercellular communication and immunity. Anti-aging amino acids attach to the skin and fill in lines and gaps, making skin appear smoother while also improving its tone and color. Anti-aging amino acids also provide exfoliation, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and reduce the appearance of age spots and other blemishes caused by sun damage.
Anti-aging amino acids have collagen-producing properties, which then fill in fine lines and wrinkles in the skin. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein, and skin has an impressive ability to absorb anti-aging amino acids. According to research scientists, anti-aging amino acids form a cluster that is absorbed deep into the skin. They then communicate with cells to stimulate collagen production.
Increased collagen production and collagen are associated with firm, more even skin and skin tone. Collagen makes up 75% of our skin, and as we age it becomes thinner and softer. Since collagen injections are often painful and potentially harmful, this is where anti-aging amino acids come in and work their magic. They can stimulate collagen production and youthful skin naturally. Anti-aging amino acids can take care of your skin where collagen leaves off.
The Beautify DermaSmooth Serum contains 3 main Amino acids: Leucine, Tyrosine, and Alanine.
Safflower Oil (Linoleic Acid)
Seals in Skin Moisture, Maintains Elasticity
Safflower oil is one of the richest sources of linoleic acid, a natural moisturizing agent. Linoleic acid is an essential Omega-6 fatty acid. It is a necessary nutrient and helps maintain elasticity in the skin by removing flaky, dry skin and enabling the skin to retain moisture and reduce acne and blemishes. Safflower oil penetrates the skin very easily and does not clog the pores, making it suitable for sensitive skin.
Linoleic acid is a key reason why safflower oil works so well in skin care products. Linoleic acid offers powerful dirt and oil removing abilities, and it also provides a softening effect to your skin, and without irritation.
Safflower oil is used as a lubricant with occlusive properties, meaning that it acts as a protective barrier to prevent water from leaving your skin.
Amazing Skin Rejuvenation Properties
Rosewood is most effective to stimulate the cells and regenerate tissue, therefore aiding rejuvenation of the skin and making it particularly attractive for use on mature and wrinkled skin.
Rosewood oil is an excellent choice for reducing fine lines and wrinkles as well as promoting the growth of new skin cells. Rosewood oil may also be used to fade scars.
Because it is gentle, rosewood can be very beneficial to sensitive or irritated skin. It is also known as an antiseptic, and its bactericidal properties make it a suitable natural remedy for acne. Rosewood is nonirritant, nontoxic, and non-sensitizing, making it extremely versatile and one of the safer oils to use directly on the skin.
Clinically–Proven Active with Anti-Inflammatory Properties,
Healing Qualities, & Rich in Anti-Oxidants Vitamin A & E
The fat of the nut of the African Shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa) is the source of Shea butter. The traditional use of the butter is to reduce the appearance of fine lines, scars and stretch marks, and to ease a variety of skin irritations, such as psoriasis, eczema and sunburn. Makers of cosmetics also mix this natural substance with other botanical ingredients. Shea butter is ideal for the topical application of cosmetic and medicinal formulas, because it melts on contact and is readily absorbed into the skin, without leaving a greasy residue.
The healing qualities of Shea butter are due to the presence of several fatty acids and plant sterols, namely oleic, stearic, palmitic and linolenic acids. These oil-soluble components are nonsaponifiable, meaning they do not undergo saponification, or convert to soap, when introduced to an alkali. Shea butter possesses a significantly greater nonsaponifiable fraction than most other nut oils and fats, which lends the substance greater healing potential for the skin.
Shea butter contains several derivatives of cinnamic acid, a compound common to cinnamon and balsam trees. In the May 2010 issue of the “Journal of Oleo Science,” Toshihiro Akihisa and fellow researchers published the results of a study that investigated the effects of four triterpene acids and four triterpene cinnamates isolated from Shea butter on tissue swelling in mouse skin. The scientists reported that Shea butter not only demonstrated anti-inflammatory benefits, but one compound, lupeol cinnamate, also prevented tumor development in a carcinogenesis test, a procedure in which cancer cells are literally “grown” in a culture dish.
Shea butter contains vitamins A and E, as well as catechins, plant antioxidants also found in green tea. While it is unclear how well vitamins A and E in raw Shea butter are absorbed, there is evidence to suggest that cinnamic acid esters in Shea fat help to prevent skin damage from ultraviolet radiation
